Bike Lube Advisor
Top picks

The best lubricants in each category

Ranked using a neutral composite of ZFC's clean, dusty and wet wear-test blocks. Lower wear is better. Tier 1 lubes get a small bump to match ZFC's own curation. No sliders, no scenario — just a shortlist.

Immersive waxes

Top 5 of 19 tested

Hot-melt wax — the lowest-wear category in ZFC's entire test set. One-off setup friction (you need a pot), then minimal ongoing effort.

Silca + Endurance Chip - *Extended intervals*

    * Extended-interval test

    Best clean-chain wear

    Treatment life
    1,746 km per application
How long one application typically lasts (real-world)
    Approx. chain life
    14,493 km total
Projected chain lifespan with this lube
    Running cost
    AUD 104 / 6,000 km
    Drivetrain cost including chain replacement
Watch out:Test methodology differs. ZFC tested the Endurance Chip under EXTENDED rewax intervals (10 rewax events across 6,000 km, ~one every 600 km) versus the standard protocol used for Silca Hot Melt (27 rewax events, ~one every 222 km). The Endurance Chip is doing 2.7× the work between rewaxes — its cumulative wear naturally looks higher in a side-by-side, but it isn't a like-for-like comparison. Treat the Endurance Chip's numbers as 'how does it hold up under its marketed extended schedule', not 'does it have higher friction than plain Hot Melt'.

Wax-emulsion drips

Top 5 of 10 tested

Liquid-wax chemistry in a bottle. Pot-compatible — chain can go back in your immersive-wax pot after a wipe-down. Set times vary from minutes to overnight.

Watch out:Did not replicate in field testing. Stayed soft like Squirt rather than hardening like SSD. Do not treat as interchangeable with wax-emulsion drips for pot-compatibility purposes.

Oils

Top 5 of 31 tested

Traditional drip oils — easy to apply, widely sold, forgiving while you're learning everything else about cycling. Wax outperforms them on wear, but oils are the right entry point if jumping straight to wax is too much. Not compatible with wax: applying one to a waxed chain commits you to a full chain-stripper degrease.

Composite score = 0.4 × Block 1 + 0.2 × Block 2 + 0.4 × Block 4 (ZFC wear by block, lower = better). Block 2 is substituted when missing; Tier 1 lubes receive a small boost to reflect ZFC's own curation. Data source: ZFC master XLSX + Choice Matrix.
