Cyclowax Race Wax
Category leader · Best wet performance · Longest treatment life · Cheapest to run
Ranked using a neutral composite of ZFC's clean, dusty and wet wear-test blocks. Lower wear is better. Tier 1 lubes get a small bump to match ZFC's own curation. No sliders, no scenario — just a shortlist.
Hot-melt wax — the lowest-wear category in ZFC's entire test set. One-off setup friction (you need a pot), then minimal ongoing effort.

Best clean-chain wear
Best clean-chain wear
Liquid-wax chemistry in a bottle. Pot-compatible — chain can go back in your immersive-wax pot after a wipe-down. Set times vary from minutes to overnight.
Rounds out the top five — solid alternative.
Traditional drip oils — easy to apply, widely sold, forgiving while you're learning everything else about cycling. Wax outperforms them on wear, but oils are the right entry point if jumping straight to wax is too much. Not compatible with wax: applying one to a waxed chain commits you to a full chain-stripper degrease.
Strong all-rounder near the top of this category.
