Character. A brutal 100 km gravel race over the Swartberg Pass and back in South Africa's Klein Karoo. Stony unpaved mountain road, extreme heat, serious climbing, fierce reputation.

Conditions. Karoo late summer: 28–38 °C, bone dry, stony surface, direct sun all day. One of the hottest gravel events in the calendar.

Lube plan

If you wax — ZFC-recommended path. Extreme heat is the defining variable. Heat-tolerant wax formulation is essential — standard waxes can soften and shed at Karoo temperatures. Carry Synergetic as mandatory backup. 100 km is the distance but heat extends effective wear significantly.

If you're on oil — pragmatic equivalent. Use a heat-rated wet/all-conditions oil rather than a thin dry-lube formulation. Apply pre-event, carry a bottle.
