Character. Amateur entrants ride a selected queen-stage of that year's Tour on the same closed roads. Pro-grade logistics, 15,000-strong field, and a course that will break you if you haven't respected the climbs.

Conditions. Alpine/Pyrenean July tarmac. Ambient forecast typically 20–25 °C but climbing sections hit 28–32 °C in direct sun. Rain is uncommon but mountain weather flips fast.

Lube plan

If you wax — ZFC-recommended path. Pre-event: immersive hot-melt with a heat-tolerant base (Silca Endurance Chip helps). 170 km is inside single-application SAL for any top wax, so no mid-ride top-up needed. If a mountain shower catches you out, the wax treatment rides through it — over a single 170 km day the cost of rinsed wax is small next to the post-ride strip commitment of oil-over-wax. No oil to carry. Finish the day clean-waxed.

If you're on oil — pragmatic equivalent. If you're already running a quality oil (Silca Synergetic, Rex Black Diamond, your usual): apply it the night before. 170 km sits inside the single-application life of any decent oil — a small bottle in the jersey is insurance only. No protocol switch, no degrease commitment to plan around.

Staged recommendation

Long warm-weather race day — staged plan

Alpine / Dolomite race-day tarmac reaches 30°C+ on climbs even when the ambient forecast is cooler. Wax life shortens in the heat — same mitigation as the hot-weather plan: heat-tolerant wax base + Silca Endurance chip.

Above 35°C tarmac, wax-only life can drop by 30–40%. If you're riding in Calpe / Tucson / summer Southern Europe conditions, plan on shorter rewax intervals or a hot-weather additive.

    • Especially useful in: hot Southern-European climates where wax life contracts, and cold winters where re-waxing is a chore.
