Character. The most classical French sportive. Four legendary climbs in one day, finishing up Alpe d'Huez. Same character as L'Étape but a permanent route, ridden by tens of thousands every year.

Conditions. Same July-Alps profile as L'Étape — ambient 20–25 °C, tarmac 28–32 °C on climbs in direct sun, mostly dry.

Lube plan

If you wax — ZFC-recommended path. Identical to L'Étape for lubricant purposes. One coat of a top wax survives the day. A heat-tolerant wax base (Endurance Chip) is helpful when the Galibier is in full sun — not mandatory.

If you're on oil — pragmatic equivalent. Same as L'Étape — apply your usual oil the night before, optional small bottle as insurance. Quality oils handle 170+ km without re-application.

Staged recommendation

Long warm-weather race day — staged plan

Alpine / Dolomite race-day tarmac reaches 30°C+ on climbs even when the ambient forecast is cooler. Wax life shortens in the heat — same mitigation as the hot-weather plan: heat-tolerant wax base + Silca Endurance chip.

Above 35°C tarmac, wax-only life can drop by 30–40%. If you're riding in Calpe / Tucson / summer Southern Europe conditions, plan on shorter rewax intervals or a hot-weather additive.
