Belgian Waffle Ride Arizona

Desert BWR in warm winter sunshine — rocks, cacti, and mixed-surface gravel.

Distance
200 km
Elevation
3,200 m climbing
Discipline
Gravel

Character. The winter BWR. Desert terrain with rocky doubletrack and dirt road through Sonoran saguaro country. Warmer than California in January, less climbing, but the rocky surface is more abrasive on drivetrains.

Conditions. Arizona winter: 15–24 °C, dry, sunny, light dust. Rocky desert surface is harder on chains than limestone gravel.

Lube plan

If you wax — ZFC-recommended path. Desert rock and dust are harder on chains than they look. Use a durable wax blend; treat this more seriously than the distance alone suggests. Single pre-event application is sufficient — no top-up needed in the dry desert.

If you're on oil — pragmatic equivalent. A quality oil pre-event handles the dry conditions. If you feel grinding on the rocky sectors, wipe the chain mid-ride — don't just add more oil.

    Single application

    Approx. chain life
    29,557 km
    Cost / 6000 km
    $50.75
    Why this rank

#1 because: dry gravel/MTB/CX riding is dominated by dry-dust contamination — scoring weights 60% on Block 2 (dry contamination) and 40% on Block 1. Cyclowax Race Wax is eligible after scenario filtering and its wear (0.005) is the lowest in the eligible set, which — given your priority weights — edges out every other eligible lube.
